Beginning of seasonal programs at Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Seasonal education programs at Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CHNS) began on Sunday, April 24. These programs include special lectures and presentations on unique aspects of the islands’ history, and all lectures are free and open to the public.

The start-of-season program schedule for the coming weeks is shown below, and upcoming events can also be viewed online at Cape Hatteras National Seashore website. Additional programs and courses will be added as the 2022 summer season progresses.

Bodie Island Lighthouse Climb

  • Appointment: Wednesday-Saturday until early fall 2022. First ascent at 9 a.m. and last ascent at 5:40 p.m.
  • Details: Climbing tickets can only be purchased on the day of the planned ascent. Tickets are on sale Wednesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. Buy your tickets at www.recreation.gov/ticket/252034/ticket/10087143.

Bodie Island Educational Programs

Lighting the Way for 150 Years – Bodie Island Lighthouse

  • Appointment: Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. (April 24-May 27)
  • Location: Meet on the back porch of the Warden’s Quarters.
  • The description: Discuss the details and history of this beautiful sentinel.

Shaping these barrier islands

  • Appointment: Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. (April 24-May 27)
  • Location: Meet on the back porch of the Warden’s Quarters.
  • The description: Wars, hurricanes and ocean currents have all impacted the shores of Cape Hatteras. Join us to learn more about some of these events and the changes they have brought to these islands.

Hatteras Island Educational Programs

Lighting the Way for Over 150 Years – Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

  • Appointment: Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. (from April 24 to May 27)
  • Location: Meet at the Hatteras Island Visitor Center Pavilion
  • The description: Discuss the details and history of this beautiful sentinel and learn about ongoing restoration efforts.
