SIDNEY, Neb. – Approximately 25 children from Cheyenne County participated in the 4-H Goat and Sheep Show.

On Thursday at the Cheyenne County Fair, several different 4-H events were held. Open rabbit class started at 7:45 a.m. Poultry competitions started at 9:15 a.m. The sheep show started at 1:00 p.m. and the meat and dairy goat show at 3:00 p.m.

There is also a 4-H fashion show at 6:00 p.m. and a barrel race at 7:00 p.m.

Cheyenne and Deuel County 4-H educator Laura Narjes said, “We have something for all young people.

Narjes covers the Sidney, Leyton, Potter-Dix, South Platte and Creek Valley 4-H programs.

“We have about 200 young people participating in Cheyenne County,” Narjes said. “Ranging from shooting sports to horses, and all manner of livestock.”

Narjes said 4-H also has cooking, sewing and entomology activities.

Narjes said that there are about 16 young people who participate in the goat and about 10 young people who participate in the sheep.

“I love watching the older kids help mentor the younger ones,” Narjes said. “It’s also been great year after year to see the confidence grow in these youngsters as they gain more experience.”

Narjes said the children focus on the nutrition and health of their goats by feeding and watering them daily.

“It also teaches them a lot about giving back to their community, leadership, responsibility, and there’s just a lot you can learn about life in general through the 4-H program,” Narjes said.

On Friday, July 29, the 4-H beef contest will begin. This includes breeding heifer at 10:30 a.m., bucket calf at 10:45 a.m., stocker/feeder at 11:15 a.m. and open class beef at 11:45 a.m.

“4-H is an awesome program that helps kids find their spark,” Narjes said. “It allows them to explore many different avenues and learn a lot about different projects.”
