Free educational programs are offered to the public on Saturdays and Sundays at the Elk Country Visitor Center, located at 950 Winslow Hill Road, Benezette. Here is a list of programs scheduled for April, provided by Conservation Education Coordinator Ben Porkolab. Saturday April 23, 2 p.m. Earth Day/Wildflowers: Happy Earth Day! Check out some of the wildflowers you might see when visiting elk country. Participants will receive a pack of wildflower seeds to take home. Sunday April 24, 2 p.m. Momentum Explanations: New to learning elk? Join the staff for basic dispatch as we learn about the history, ecology and behavior of elk. Do you have burning questions about elk? Wondering how elk are managed? Maybe you have a question about their favorite foods or habits? Maybe you would like to know how long they live or when is the calving season? Saturday April 30, 2 p.m. Discussion on Turkey: The spring turkey season is fast approaching. Join the staff as we talk about turkeys. Some of the areas that will be covered are turkey identification, diet, habitat, and breeding. Take advantage of this program to learn about one of the most common game birds in the state. qqq
