Gatton Academy Receives 2022 STEM Inspiring Programs Award from Insight Into Diversity Magazine

Today, the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science at Western Kentucky University received the 2022 Inspiring Programs in STEM Award from OVERVIEW of diversity magazine, the largest and oldest publication on diversity and inclusion in higher education. The Inspiring Programs in STEM award recognizes colleges and universities that encourage and support students from underrepresented groups to enter science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science will be featured, along with 78 other recipients, in the September 2022 issue of OVERVIEW of diversity magazine.

The recipients of the Inspiring Programs in STEM award were selected based on their efforts to inspire and encourage a new generation of young people to consider careers in STEM through mentorship, teaching, research and programs and successful initiatives.

“With the support of Western Kentucky University’s dedicated faculty and staff, our students explore many different STEM disciplines in a rigorous academic environment. Through their exploration, many are beginning to hone their interests,” said Gatton Academy Principal Lynette Breedlove. “About 70% of Gatton Academy alumni have majored in STEM fields, with an additional 10% majoring in STEM-related fields.”

OVERVIEW of diversity The magazine selected The Gatton Academy because of its mission to provide a residential program on the campus of Western Kentucky University for bright and highly motivated Kentucky juniors and seniors from diverse backgrounds who have shown an interest in pursuing careers. advancements in STEM. Gatton Academy students have the opportunity to participate in a rich, living learning environment with the support of faculty, staff, and peers. While enrolled, students participate in university courses, undergraduate supervised research, and study abroad programs.

We are proud to honor these programs as role models for others higher education institutions and beyond.
