Dog lovers can’t get enough of one breed – helping it to remain the nation’s most popular for another year in a row.
Labrador retrievers again top the list of furry friends registered with the American Kennel Club, according to figures shared on March 15.
“The Labrador Retriever was the most popular dog breed in the United States in 2021 – for the 31st consecutive year, no less,” the club said in a press release. “(He usurped the Cocker Spaniel in 1991 and hasn’t let go of the top spot since.)”
These days, cocker spaniels are much lower on the list, coming in at No. 29.
So what other types of puppies currently rank among the most popular? Here are the breeds that round out the top five:
- french bulldogs
- golden retrievers
- german shepherds
Of the 197 dog breeds considered, the American Kennel Club said fans praise the Labs for their “versatility and temperament.”
“If I want to hike, run, swim, play ball or hunt, they’re ready to go,” Judge Judy Heim of California said in a post on the club’s website. “However, if I want to stay home and eat a gallon of ice cream, watch the Super Bowl, or [watch a] movie, they’re thrilled to be hanging there too. Hence, this makes the Lab an excellent service dog.
