NEW YORK, March 15, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — There’s a new top dog in town! Last year, the Golden Retriever took from Denver first place in the American Kennel Club (AKC®) 2021 ranking of the most popular dog breeds recognized by the AKC in the United States

The Golden Retriever has also been recognized as the #1 puppy in Nashville, TN and Boston, Massachusetts.

The Golden Retriever is not the only one to shake up the top 10 most popular breeds. German Shepherds, Poodles and Rottweilers are all moving up the rankings, along with the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, which broke into the top ten in 2021.

The AKC also announced its national ranking today during a virtual press conference at the AKC Museum of the Dog in New York City. No one can stop the Lab! The always popular Labrador Retrievers is the nation’s favorite dog for the 31stst consecutive year.

While the adorable Lab remains a constant at the top of the charts, the Poodle has returned to the top five after 24 years, wiping out the perennial favorite Bulldog for the first time in nearly a decade. The Bulldog has been among the top five most popular breeds since 2012.
